Getting your dog trained is an exciting adventure, and guess what? You've got awesome options! Whether it's in-person classes or online courses, both can be super valuable resources to learn training techniques for your furry friend.

Imagine an expert right there with you, seeing your dog's unique personality and guiding you every step of the way — that's the magic of in-person training! But don't count out online courses; they offer a different kind of fantastic support that can make a huge difference.

This guide will break down both choices, looking at how they stack up in terms of flexibility, cost, convenience, and how effective they are. We'll help you discover the perfect training path for your dog's journey to becoming a well-behaved superstar!

Key Takeaways:

  • Online courses offer unmatched flexibility and convenience, letting you learn anytime, anywhere, at your own pace, which is perfect for busy lives and remote learners.
  • Online training is generally more affordable and highly effective for most common dog behaviors and puppy issues, providing excellent value compared to often more expensive in-person options.
  • In-person training excels for highly complex, severe behavioral issues or when direct, hands-on physical guidance is necessary, but for everyday challenges, online resources are incredibly powerful.

Flexibility and Convenience: Online vs. In-Person Training

reactive dog online training

When it comes to learning, online courses truly shine in terms of flexibility and convenience. They're designed to fit into your life, not the other way around.

Why Online Courses Work for You

Here are some reasons why getting an online professional dog trainer works.

Learn Anytime, Anywhere

Online training is available 24/7. This is huge because most of us can only absorb a few new things at a time. Instead of cramming, you can learn a little each day, whenever it suits you. Got five minutes before bed? Ten with your morning coffee? Perfect. You're in control, and you'll actually retain the information.

Access From Anywhere

Whether you're on vacation or at a different meeting, you can easily tap in and watch your training videos. All you need is an internet connection.

Lifetime Access is a Game-Changer

Many online programs offer lifetime access. Since the content is already online, it's often a simple matter of granting you ongoing access. This means if you forget something a month or six months down the line, you can quickly jump back in and learn those behavior modification techniques again. You can even share insights with your partner or kids, ensuring everyone's on the same page. That's something you just can't do with a one-time, in-person session.

Perfect for Busy Lives and Remote Learners

Online courses are ideal for packed schedules. You don't have to commit to weeks of evening classes or lengthy travel, which is often required for in-person training. This is especially beneficial if you live remotely and don't have local trainers nearby.

Self-Paced Learning

We all learn differently. Online courses let you go at your own speed. Want to power through everything in a week? Great. Prefer to spread it out over a year? No problem. You set the pace that works best for your learning style and schedule.

The Limits of In-Person Training

loose leash walking training

Rigid Schedules

In-person training, whether group classes or one-on-one sessions, often means you're tied to someone else's schedule. Trainers might only work specific hours, and you have to fit around their availability.

Geographical Constraints

You're limited to trainers in your immediate area. This can be a real downside if there aren't many experienced professionals nearby, potentially forcing you to settle for someone who's simply local, not necessarily the best fit for your needs.

Cost Comparison: Online Dog Training VS In Person Lessons

When you're looking to train your dog, cost is definitely a factor. Generally, online courses offer a much more affordable path to effective training compared to traditional in-person sessions.

Why Online Courses Save You Money

Online training programs have significantly lower overheads.

There's no physical location to maintain, and no travel time or expenses for anyone involved. Plus, the beauty of recorded content means that a single training video can reach tens of thousands of people. This ability to spread the cost across a large audience makes online learning inherently more budget-friendly than one-on-one, in-person coaching.

You'll find a wide range of pricing options online, from affordable monthly subscriptions and one-time fees to lifetime access or pay-as-you-go lessons. There are also behavior-specific online courses that target the issues of reactive dogs, and even dogs with potty training needs.

While some inexpensive courses are incredibly valuable, and some very pricey ones might not deliver, it's essential to do your research. Always check reviews, see how long the trainers have been established, and watch sample videos to make sure the style resonates with you.

Just like with any training, approaches vary. Some focus on correction, while others use positive reinforcement (often involving food and treats). My approach, for example, is rooted in dog psychology — understanding how your dog thinks. It's about winning your dog's mind before you even begin formal training, so they naturally listen. Regardless of the specific method, online courses are typically the most economical and often the best value option.

The Higher Price Tag of In-Person Training

best dog training programs

In-person training, especially one-on-one sessions, is usually more expensive. The cost can skyrocket even further if you send your dog away for “boot camp” training. While investing in your dog is commendable, and these options can be wonderful for certain situations, you need to be cautious.

It's easy to get caught in a cycle where you sign up for a few sessions, only to be told your dog needs many more, or perhaps a shock collar, or even an expensive boot camp. Travel, equipment, and follow-up sessions can quickly add up, leaving you feeling like you've been taken for a ride. Before committing, always get a clear understanding of the typical package and time commitment required to achieve your training goals.

The Verdict on Cost

For dog owners on a budget, or those seeking foundational training (especially for puppies), online courses are generally the most cost-effective solution. Much of that basic, essential knowledge can be gained and applied successfully through a well-structured online program.

Learning Effectiveness for Common Dog Behavior Issues

Canine communication body language

When it comes to getting your dog on the right track, you might wonder which training method truly hits the mark. Let's look at how effective online and in-person options are for different situations.

Online Courses: Perfect for Foundational Skills

Online courses are incredibly effective for teaching training tips for everyday behaviors like basic obedience, puppy training, leash manners, crate training, and recall.

Think about it: through video demonstrations, you can see classic dog behaviors and common training scenarios play out perfectly. Sometimes, you'll even witness rare situations that you might never encounter in a real-life training session.

This means you get to learn from expertly captured moments that a live session might miss if the “perfect storm” of a situation doesn't happen. Many online courses also offer quizzes to help you check your understanding, which is a great way to reinforce what you've learned.

Now, for highly specialized or complex situations — like training a police or service dog — online isn't ideal because you really need that real-time, hands-on feedback.

However, for most general issues, like your dog's reactivity or those typical puppy antics, online courses are fantastic.

Plus, online platforms allow you to learn from the most experienced trainers worldwide. This means you're often tapping into expertise from professionals who've worked with thousands of dogs, far more than most local trainers might have encountered. This broad access can significantly boost the effectiveness of your learning.

In-Person Training: Essential for Complex Challenges

in person dog training benefits

In-person training truly shines when you need direct, hands-on guidance. If you're facing a very specific or complex behavioral issue, like severe aggression towards children or other people, or if you have a powerful, large-breed dog that's difficult to manage, then in-person instruction can be incredibly impactful—even necessary. Similarly, if you're training a service dog for a specific task within your home, you'll want that in-person support to ensure every detail is perfect and your dog meets the exact required standard. This is also helpful for shelter dogs who need to be assessed first before an appropriate training can be given.

The Verdict on Learning Effectiveness

For everyday dog training, puppy issues, and most behavioral challenges, online courses are absolutely brilliant. They equip you with the knowledge and techniques you need. However, for very serious, highly specific, or complex behavioral issues, it's definitely worth considering in-person training for that personalized, immediate feedback and hands-on support.

Level of Interaction and Support

The support you receive during your training journey can make all the difference. Let's compare how online and in-person options typically stack up.

Online Courses: Rich Support, Often Missed Opportunities

Many online courses offer an incredible array of support options, including forums, live Q&A sessions via Zoom, and direct email access to trainers. There's often a robust support system already in place, making it easy to get help.

That said, it's vital to check the quality of this support. An email response is good, but a five or ten-minute chat on a Zoom call can provide much clearer guidance.

While Zoom calls offer good interaction, they can be limiting if you can't show your trainer your specific setup at home or in your yard. It's tough to convey a behavioral issue if it's not happening live or isn't captured on video. However, some courses allow you to submit video clips of your dog's behavior.

This is incredibly valuable! A two-minute video clip can give a trainer crucial insights into your dog's reactions and responses, changing everything about the advice they can offer. Many online courses are also well-equipped to provide this kind of long-term, ongoing support, so it's definitely worth researching what's included before you commit.

In-Person Training: Direct Interaction, But Limited Longevity

in person training for dogs

In-person training provides that invaluable direct, face-to-face interaction. However, it's important to realize that once your paid sessions conclude, the ongoing support might be just as limited, if not more so, than with an online course.

An in-person trainer's main setup is for in-person sessions; once they're not physically there, you're often left relying on phone calls, video clips, or trying to describe your situation.

The huge advantage of in-person training is that a trainer can visit your property. They can see your house layout, your garden, your fence, where your dog sleeps — all crucial details, especially if behavioral issues are happening in the home.

This direct assessment is incredibly valuable when coming up with ideal training methods. In-person group sessions also offer a fantastic opportunity for socialization, allowing the trainer to observe your dog's interactions with other dogs and owners, and provide immediate suggestions based on those dynamic energies.

Be aware, though, that extensive in-person support packages can become very expensive, with added costs for travel time. Always get a clear understanding of the total expected investment to avoid unexpected boot camp costs that could run into thousands of dollars.

The Verdict on Interaction and Support

In-person training offers the highest level of direct, personalized interaction, which can be incredibly beneficial, but it often comes at a high price. Many online courses, on the other hand, are structured to provide incredible value through a mix of media—videos, audio, phone calls, Zoom catch-ups, email, blogs, and forums. Do your homework to find the support structure that truly works for you and your dog.

Accessibility and Reach

Where you live and what's available to you can significantly impact your training options. Let's explore the reach of online versus in-person training.

Online Courses: Training Without Borders

benefits of online dog training programs

The beauty of online courses is their universal accessibility: anyone with an internet connection can access them, anywhere in the world!

This is a huge benefit, especially if you live in a remote area, in the mountains, or far from any large town where dog trainers might be scarce. Online options are perfect in such situations. They also cater to a vast array of training goals. You can find courses for nearly all general behavior training needs and even highly specialized topics. If you need specific training in a niche area, there's a good chance you'll find it online, which is a real advantage.

In-Person Training: Location, Location, Location

With in-person training, you're often quite limited by your location, the trainer's availability, and local facilities.

You might live far from any truly experienced trainers, or the expert you really want to work with could be booked solid for months, leaving you waiting when you need help now. Another challenge is the lack of suitable facilities.

For instance, if you need to train your dog in a busy environment with lots of cats, cars, people, or noise, those situations might not be easily created on the spot in an in-person session, especially if it's a quiet day.

Online courses, however, can provide video examples of exactly how to handle these varied scenarios, allowing you to learn from them directly. Sometimes, in-person training can leave you feeling a bit stuck if the ideal training situation simply doesn't arise when you're with the trainer.

The Verdict on Accessibility and Reach

Online courses offer unparalleled accessibility, making them invaluable for anyone without nearby trainers, or for those seeking very specific training. They bring the expertise to you, no matter where you are.

Key Questions to Help You Decide

online dog behavior courses

Choosing the right training path for your furry friend is a big decision. Here are some questions to guide you:

  • Is it for a puppy or common behavioral issues? Online training is often ideal and cost-effective for these, addressing new challenges as they arise.
  • What's your budget and schedule like? Online options are generally more affordable and flexible, while in-person training demands more time and financial commitment.
  • Do you need help with complex or severe issues? For extreme aggression (especially towards humans), specialized training (like service dogs), or managing very powerful adult dogs, in-person training with hands-on support is invaluable.
  • Are local trainers scarce in your area? Online training opens up access to experienced trainers worldwide, a game-changer if local options are limited.

Conclusion: Making the Right Choice for You and Your Dog

Both online and in-person dog training offer unique strengths, and the best choice depends on your needs and your dog's.

Online courses are incredibly flexible, cost-effective, and brilliant for general training needs and puppy issues. They bring expert guidance right to your home, whenever it suits you.

However, in-person training is ideal for complex behavioral challenges that require real-time feedback and a personalized, hands-on assessment. This is especially true for severe aggression or managing powerful dogs.

Ultimately, the most effective path is the one you thoroughly research and commit to. There are fantastic trainers in both realms, so trust your judgment and embark on this wonderful journey with your beloved dog! If you're looking for an online option, “The Dog Calming Code” is available.

Let me be upfront: relying on a whistle to stop a barking behavior is setting yourself and your dog up to failure. A whistle isn't the ultimate solution.

But would I still recommend you to get one? Absolutely! They can be a fantastic tool to have, especially if you have a dog who’s a little out of control, doesn’t listen to you, or gets up to mischievous things. But is a whistle enough to stop a dog barking continuously?

But should you put all your trust on this device? Read on, let's debunk this dog training myth.

Key Takeaways

  • Dog whistles are a useful training tool, not a magical solution to stop barking. While they can be effective for recall training and gaining your dog's attention, they won't automatically stop a dog from barking, especially a neighbor's dog.
  • Addressing the root cause of barking is crucial. Whether it's separation anxiety, lack of exercise, or a protective instinct, understanding why a dog barks is the first step towards resolving the issue. Training, behavior modification, and ensuring your dog's well-being are far more effective than relying on quick fixes like anti-bark collars or whistles.
  • Positive reinforcement and leadership are key to a well-behaved dog. Building a strong bond with your dog, establishing yourself as the leader, and using positive reinforcement techniques will help prevent unwanted behaviour like excessive barking. Remember, a happy and well-adjusted dog is less likely to bark excessively in the first place.

Understanding Dog Whistles

dog whistle training

Dog whistles — they've got this almost mythical reputation, right?

Some dog owners think a dog whistle is like a magical tool only dog whisperers know about. Truth is, they're pretty straightforward. Just think of them as high-pitched whistles you blow into. Sometimes you can hear the sound, sometimes you can't. Some are pitched so high that they're beyond human hearing range. The amazing thing is dogs can hear them loud and clear.

Humans and dogs have different hearing capabilities. We're tuned into certain frequencies, our dogs are tuned into others. It makes sense that our dogs can pick up on sounds we might miss entirely. Some dogs just have extra sensitive hearing. This impressive sense of dogs is what makes dog whistles work! Farmers and trainers have been using special whistles for ages to communicate with their working dogs.

Using a dog training whistle comes with no magic; just clever use of science. Using a whistle for training can do wonders for your training. Stick around, and I'll explain exactly how they work and when you might want to use one yourself.

The Myth of Whistle Training to Stop Barking Dogs

whistle for dog barking

Okay, let's get real about dog whistles.

Dear dog owner, this post isn't about magically silencing your neighbor's yappy pooch (sorry, that's just not how it works). Instead, we're talking about how whistles can be a seriously useful tool for training your own dog and curbing their barking.

See, there's this misconception that a whistle will somehow magically shut up any dog within earshot. Maybe someone once blew a whistle, and a dog coincidentally stopped barking, leading to this whole myth. But trust me, there's no such thing as a universal “hush button” for dogs, especially not ones you don't even own.

While a dog might stop barking if they're startled or even hurt by a loud whistle, this is not an effective or ethical solution. Imagine how you'd feel if someone blasted a whistle at your dog to stop them from barking!

So, what are whistles good for? Well, they can be fantastic for dogs who are a bit unruly, have selective hearing, or just love getting into mischief. They offer a clear, consistent signal that cuts through distractions and helps you get your dog's attention, even from a distance.

Myth: The Right Whistle Can Completely Stop a Dog's Barking Issue

The Myth of Stopping Barking

Let's clear the air about this whole “whistle to stop a dog barking” thing. It's mostly a myth, plain and simple.

Dogs aren't robots; they won't just shut up from constant barking because they hear loud sounds. Sure, extreme pain might make them stop momentarily, but that's cruel and definitely not the way to go.

Causing a dog pain through loud noises to quiet them down is never okay. And let's be honest, there's no guarantee a whistle will even work, especially on a neighbor's dog.

Think about it: that barking dog might be suffering from separation anxiety or some other distress. Blasting a whistle at them won't solve the underlying problem; it might even make things worse.

Instead of resorting to quick fixes that could harm a dog, let's focus on a more effective method: understanding and addressing the root cause of their barking to change unwanted behavior. If it's a neighbor's dog, maybe a friendly conversation could lead to solutions that benefit everyone.

The Proper Use of A Dog Whistle

How Can Proper Training Recall and A Good Dog Whistle Help?

The recall command is the holy grail of dog training. It's that magical moment when your dog, no matter how distracted or far away, hears your call and comes racing back to you. A reliable recall can prevent countless unwanted behaviors, from chasing squirrels to jumping on guests. It can even save your dog's life in a dangerous situation.

How a Whistle Transforms Recall Training

A dog whistle isn't just another noisemaker. It's a game-changer for teaching the recall command.

Here are some reasons why:

Reason #1: Cuts Through the Noise

Your voice can get lost in the hustle and bustle of the world. A whistle's sharp, distinct sound pierces through distractions, ensuring your dog hears you even in a crowded park or busy street.

Reason #2: A New Stimuli To Respond To

Let's face it: your dog might be a bit “deaf” in your voice by now. They've heard it all: from gentle calls to frustrated shouts. A whistle offers a clean slate, a new sound they associate solely with positive reinforcement and coming back to you.

Reason #3: Breaks Through the Boredom

Dogs are smart. If they've heard their name a thousand times with no exciting consequence, they might tune it out. A whistle, especially when used sparingly, grabs their attention and sparks curiosity.

Recall Training Tips: From Living Room to Real World

Tip #1: Start Simple

Begin training at home in a quiet environment. Blow the whistle, reward your dog instantly when they come, and repeat.

Tip #2: Build Excitement

Make coming to you the best part of your dog's day! Use high-value treats and enthusiastic praise to create a positive association with the whistle.

Tip #3: Gradual Progression

Increase the distance and distractions gradually. Practice in different locations, starting with familiar, low-distraction areas and working your way up to more challenging environments.

Tip #4: Save it for Special Occasions

Don't overuse the whistle. Reserve it for crucial moments when you need your dog's undivided attention.

Dealing With a Neighbor's Barking Dogs

whistle training dogs

One of the trickiest things about a neighbor's barking dog is that they often don't even realize it's happening. No one wants a constantly barking dog, so if the owner is home, they'll likely try to quiet them down. However, the real issue often arises when the owner leaves, and the dog starts barking out of loneliness or anxiety. This can be incredibly frustrating for neighbors.

Before you call the police, or upset the people next door (especially if they are your new neighbors), you can talk to them about their pets' barking tendencies. If you already know the solution (which I'm going to share below), you can also share it to them.

Do you also want to spare your neighbors from your dog's nonstop barking? The key is to establish yourself as a calm, confident leader so they feel secure even when you're not around.

Luckily, there are ways to address this kind of barking, often stemming from separation anxiety. Dogs with separation anxiety might feel overly responsible and become stressed when their owner leaves.

best whistles for training dogs

You show your dog you're a leader they can trust when you take control. Leadership is not automatic. If your dog sees you taking control of the food, affection, threats and dangers, and outdoor walks, they'll respect you. I talk more about earning leadership through the Five Golden Rules of leadership. I also talk about these extensively in my Five Golden Rules blog series

Let's go back to separation anxiety in dogs. Not sure if your dog has separation anxiety? Observe their behavior when you return home. If they're exhausted and not interested in playing, they were likely stressed the entire time you were gone.

Another common reason for barking is territorial behavior. If your dog can see through the fence, they might bark at anything that moves. Sometimes, simply blocking their view can make a big difference.

[webinar_cta text=”NO MORE BARKING HEADACHES. GRAB YOUR SEAT IN THIS FREE WEBCLASS!”]

A Word of Caution: Avoid Anti-Bark Collars

dog whistle to stop barking

I strongly advise against using anti-bark collars. These devices simply punish the dog without addressing the underlying cause of their barking. They're inhumane and can create even more stress for an already anxious dog.

If you truly care about your dog's well-being, I recommend exploring solutions that address the root cause of their barking. Consider resources like the “Dog Calming Code” to help your dog feel happier, calmer, and easier to manage. It's a win-win for both you and your furry friend!

For Dog Owners: Alternatives to Dog Training Whistle

As we've discussed, addressing the root cause of barking through behavior modification and professional training is the most effective and compassionate approach. Anti-bark collars are simply not a humane or sustainable solution.

whistle training for dogs

Another factor to consider is whether your dog is getting enough exercise. Pent-up energy can sometimes lead to excessive barking. However, it's important to remember that boredom is often not the primary culprit. Barking is frequently a sign of deeper issues like anxiety, reactivity, or a strong protective instinct.

By understanding the underlying reasons for your dog's barking, you can tailor your training and management strategies to meet their specific needs. Remember, a happy and well-adjusted dog is less likely to bark excessively in the first place. So, prioritize positive reinforcement, provide plenty of exercise and mental stimulation, and seek professional guidance if needed. Your furry friend will thank you for it!

Before Giving a Noise Complaint, Reach Out To Your Neighbors First

I always recommend a humane approach, starting with communication. Often, your neighbors may not even realize their dog is barking excessively. Consider reaching out to them, either anonymously or in person, if you feel comfortable. You can even suggest helpful resources like the Dog Calming Code or professional training to address the root cause of the barking on your neighbor's property.

When you pair your dog whistle with the right training and strategies, you can curb your dog's barking behavior!

FAQs

What sound silences a barking dog?

Well, there's no single magic sound that'll instantly hush every barking dog. Some pet owners might claim a loud whistle does the trick, but honestly, that's more likely to startle or even hurt the dog than actually solve the barking problem. The best way to quiet a barking dog is to address the reason they're barking in the first place. That could mean training, more exercise, or even addressing underlying anxiety.

Why does my dog bark when I whistle?

That's a bit of a head-scratcher, isn't it? Dogs usually associate whistles with positive things, like coming back to you for a treat. If your dog's barking when you whistle, it might be confused or even a little anxious. Try using a different whistle sound or pairing the whistle with a super tasty treat to create a more positive association.

How do I get my dog to respond to a whistle?

Training your dog to respond to a whistle is all about positive reinforcement. Start by blowing the whistle and immediately giving your dog a treat when they look at you or come closer. Keep practicing in short, fun sessions, gradually increasing the distance and distractions. Before you know it, your dog will be coming running at the sound of your whistle!

How do you use a dog whistle to stop barking?

Trick question! Dog whistles aren't meant to stop barking directly. They're primarily used for recall training – teaching your dog to come back to you when called. However, a reliable recall can indirectly help with barking. If your dog is barking at something, you can use the whistle to get their attention and redirect them to a more positive behavior.

Do dog whistles silence barking dogs?

Nope, that's a myth. Some folks might think a whistle can magically shut up any dog, but that's just not true. Remember, barking is a form of communication for dogs. If they're barking, it's usually for a reason. Instead of trying to silence them with a whistle, focus on understanding why they're barking and addressing the underlying cause.

What are pealess whistles and silent whistles?

Pealess whistles are a type of whistle that produce a consistent pitch regardless of how hard or soft you blow into them. This makes them ideal for dog training, as the consistent sound is less likely to confuse the dog. Additionally, pealess whistles are incredibly loud, capable of being heard from up to two miles away, making them effective for recall training even at long distances.

A whistle for dog recall training is a very important tool that some dog owners overlook.

Of course, I recommend you go for solutions that work best for you and your dog.

If you've put in all possible effort to train your dog to come when called, and still haven't had any success, the dog recall training whistle is a tool that you absolutely must not underestimate.

dog recall training

In this blog, we're going to talk about using a whistle, and why it's a need especially if you want to have dog training success.

Let's dive in.

Key Takeaways

  • Incorporating a whistle into dog training can enhance recall training, allowing for clear communication and prompt responses without straining your voice.
  • When selecting a whistle for dog recall training, prioritize durability, portability, and sound quality to ensure effective communication with your dog during outdoor activities.
  • Consistency in using the same whistle sound and emphasizing leadership based on guidance and safety are crucial in successful dog training. Patience and a calm approach in handling setbacks are essential for continued progress.

Why I Recommend the Whistle for Dog Recall Training

I live in the countryside where roads come with rushing cars. I love letting my dogs explore freely, but I also make sure they're still safe.

My dogs are trained, and they come when I call. But, I still carry a whistle with me every time we go out because my dogs are also adventurous; I need to make sure they don't stray off to dangerous places.

You can say that I'm a top dog trainer that doesn't rely on my voice alone for dog recall training.

Here are several reasons why…

Dog Recall Whistle Comes With a Powerful Sound That Dogs Can Associate With

In my decade of training dogs, I've come to realize the sheer power of simplicity.

The whistle is a prime example of that.

whistle for dog recall training

Unlike the complex modulations of the human voice, a whistle emits a clear, piercing tone that a dog's ear can pick up and distinguish from the distraction of everyday sounds.

This crisp sound is unique, making it easier for dogs to associate it with a specific command: recall.

You Reserve Your Voice for The Really Important Commands

Your shout should be reserved for the most important communications: when you need to connect with your dog, or when you give the most crucial instructions.

dog recall training whistle

Using your voice all the time, especially over distances or in distracting environments, won't be as effective over time.

If you're constantly shouting your dog's name during recall training, your dog will find it hard to understand that your voice = urgent.

The whistle? It's calm, it's controlled, and it's constant. Because they know the sound of the whistle means “Come back here!” your dogs will come running back to you, no shouting involved.

It Reaches Longer Distances and Stands Out Among the Sounds

Dog recall training whistles are not just for the training field— they are vital tools for ensuring your dog's safety in the great outdoors.

dog recall training whistle

A dog's hearing is finely tuned to pick up high-pitched sounds, which is why a whistle's sound can travel further than the human voice, standing out amongst nature's buzz or the clamor of the city.

Whistle for Dog Recall Training Has a Sound Dogs Can Get Familiar With

Consistency is key in any form of training.

Unlike our voices, which can sound different when we are tired, frustrated, or excited, a whistle's tone doesn't change.

This consistency means your dog can get familiar with it quickly, recognizing it as a signal for a specific action: to return to you.

What to Look for in a Whistle for Dog Recall Training

If you're going for a whistle for dog recall, what should you choose? I recommend checking out these factors, so you'll get the whistle that's best for you.

Durable Material

When you're in the market for a whistle, think of it as an investment in your dog's safety.

You'll want one that withstands the elements, accidental drops, and even the occasional chew if it falls into curious jaws.

Durability ensures the sound remains consistent, which is what matters most for effective recall training.

Easy to Bring Outdoors

Your whistle should be as ready for adventure as your dog is.

Look for something lightweight with an option to attach to your keychain, belt loop, or around your neck.

It shouldn't be a hassle to carry; instead, it should be an extension of your outdoor gear as you go outdoors for exercise.

With Good Sound Quality

Sound quality isn't about music to your ears; it's about a clear, distinct signal to your dog.

A whistle with poor sound quality can fluctuate in tone, which can confuse your dog and undermine your training efforts.

The Doggy Dan Whistle

The perfect whistle for dog training doesn't have to be edgy or really expensive; it just needs to work really well for you and your dog.

I just want to put this here: I truly support whatever choice you make when it comes to the whistle you choose for dog recall training.

However, if you are looking for a whistle I personally trust, I recommend the Doggy Dan whistle for effective recall training with your dog.

It's a straightforward, trainer-endorsed tool that can help improve your training sessions. In my years of testing various whistles, this one stands out in terms of sound quality and durability.

Whistle for Dog Recall Training: Strategies and Tips Dog Owners Should Understand

Start by Creating Association

Before the whistle means anything to your dog, it must become synonymous with something they desire.

Start by associating the whistle with positive experiences.

Blow it gently before meal times or right before a play session. The goal is to get your dog to connect the sound with moments that mean, “Hey, something good is waiting for me!”

REVERSE REACTIVITY (FREE WEB CLASS)

Build on the Positive

Now that your dog perks up at the sound of the whistle, it's time to work on the recall. Start in a controlled environment without distractions.

Give the whistle a blow, and if your dog comes, reward them immediately with a high-value treat, play, or affection.

Repeat this, gradually increasing the distance.

Move to Distractions

The real test of recall comes when there are competing interest.

Once your dog is responding reliably in a quiet environment, introduce more challenging scenarios.

The next step would be taking them to a park where other dogs and people are, and continue your training there. Always reward them for coming back to you.

The Importance of Consistency

I cannot stress enough how crucial consistency is. Use the same whistle-blow every time.

Your dog should know that that one sound—and one sound only—means it's time to return to you.

Maintaining Leadership

Leadership in dog training isn't about being loud or aggressive. It's about being the source of guidance and safety for your dog.

In my previous blogs, I highly emphasize the power of leadership and control. When you're a leader in your dog's eyes, it solves the most pressing dog training issues, including the recall.

I talk more about becoming the leader in your dog's eyes in my online training program, The Dog Calming Code™.

You can check my other blogs related to the topic of how to become a pack leader here.

Handling Setbacks

Training isn't linear, and there will be setbacks. Your dog may ignore the whistle one day, or they may be too distracted by a squirrel. Stay calm.

If you get frustrated, your dog will pick up on that energy and may become anxious or resistant. Reset, and try again.

Safety as a Priority

Always remember that the whistle is a tool for safety.

It's not just for when you want to leave the park; it's for those moments when immediate recall can prevent an accident or danger.

When you blow that whistle, you're not just calling your dog; you're potentially saving their life.

GET PUPPY COACH™!

Is Your Dog Still Not Responding To Your Calls?

I always tell dog owners that if their recall training does not work, they can try again using a whistle.

But if issues still persist after using one of the most effective tools in dog training, I recommend getting down to the bottom of the issue: leadership.

If your dog does not see you as the pack leader who is in control of everything (including them!), they will be thinking, “Why should I respond to their calls? I'm the one in charge here!”

I've seen the recall finally work for dog owners after months of training. The secret? Really becoming the leader their dogs look up to, listen to, and respond to.

With the right leadership and a great whistle on your side, you can transform your dog training journey.

In the perfect world, the best dog recall training concludes with you able to let out a call and a whistle and your dog rushing towards you. But that’s not always the reality.

Our dogs love to explore — sometimes leaving a significant gap between us and them. That kind of independence is good! But it’s anxiety inducing when your dog becomes too far from you and you aren’t sure your call can make them come back.

It’s important that before we let our pets roam freely, we need to assure that wherever they are and whatever that do, with just one call they’ll come back to you.

The foundation of teaching recall training to dogs is this: your dog should know that you calling out to them is ALWAYS a good thing.

How do you practice dog recall that makes your dog come back to you every time? Read on to learn more.

Key Takeaways:

  • There’s power in giving random treats to your dog when you’re doing recall training.
  • When recall training, you have to trust your dog that he will come back to you when you call.
  • Giving clear and consistent commands can increase the success of recall training.

What Makes Dog Recall Training Fail? AKA: Why Your Dog Isn’t Listening to You

“Dan, I try calling and whistling and my dog isn’t responding. I have to chase him to ensure he’s safe and get him home.”

This scenario is common to me: dog owner starts recall training and doesn’t get any results. Dogs ignore recall training by not responding, or running away even more.

But what makes dogs not listen to recall? What makes a recall not work at all?

The answer is this: dog recall training fails when owners don’t build confidence in dogs that being called in is always A GREAT THING.

As A Dog Trainer, My Biggest Dog Recall Training Tip Is To Only Use Recall For Rewards And Not For Punishments

Hi, I'm Doggy Dan, and the best way on how to recall train a dog is to make the recall really good news. Helping your dog associate recall with perks can make training easier.

(I talk about my unconventional strategy in the video below.)

When they are called in, it should always mean REWARDS; be it hugs, treats, or play time!

Once we have established positive association with recall, it will be much easier to call our dogs in.

Since Your Dog Will Be Distracted By The Outdoors, You Have To Make Sure Your Recall Has Something Exciting To Offer

Another rule I have for a successful recall training is this: always making sure that my dogs will get a treat or a reward THAT THEY LOVE!

The outdoors is exciting! Our dogs will be busy chasing around birds and jumping on puddles.

We have to make sure that when we use the whistle or the call, we have something that they love!

They’ll come running to us EVERY TIME with this strategy.

How to Teach Dogs Recall Training with Treats – Tips From a Top Dog Trainer

Over the years, I have learned of a super successful strategy for recall training that made dog owners say

“Wow! Dan, you totally made him come back!”

Will you be surprised if I tell you my recall training is inspired by the slot machines at the casino?

How to Use Treats in Recall Training: What Works the Best

Like what I mentioned above, you need to remember the two things that make recall training work:

a.) Dogs need to know that when you call, it’s always for something good.

b.) They should know that if they come, a delicious treat is waiting!

Now here’s my Number #1 tip: GIVE RANDOM REWARDS.

People Keep Coming Back to the Slot Machines Because of the Jackpot. You Can Use This In Rewards for Recall Training

Before I start recall training for dogs, I always let my dogs see the rewards they’re going to get when they come to me.

It’s like letting them know “There’s a jackpot here!”

In a bag, I would have my dog’s favorite treat. Let’s say they like chicken. I would mix it in with other great treats like cheese and bacon.

Then I would let my dog smell the bag to let him know a treat is waiting for him when he comes back.

GET MY 5 GOLDEN RULES FOR FREE!

Give Their Favorite Treats Randomly

“But Doggy Dan, will my dog like it if I don’t give my dog his favorite treats every time?”

One of the biggest misconceptions when using treats in dog recall training is that the more we give them their favorite treat, the more they will come back.

If we go back to slot machines, will it still be exciting if we get a dollar for every dollar we put in? Over time, it will become boring.

Your dog’s favorite treat will feel ordinary when they get it every single time.

“Ehh. My mom is calling. I’m going to get cheese again. Let me chase that butterfly one more time.”

Now compare it to giving their favorite treats randomly!

They will come back again and again because they’ll be waiting for that golden jackpot — that favorite treat among the treats.

Every time you call, they will be thinking “I could be getting cheese this time!” and they’ll be running to you swiftly!

The Power of Giving One Clear Command

How many different names, phrases, or tones of voice do you employ when summoning your dog?

Let's be truthful! Many individuals possess an assortment of commands. Some are used when the dog is in trouble, while others signal the arrival of a treat.

However, the reality is that this array of words, expressions, and vocal inflections only serves to confuse our dogs.

REVERSE REACTIVITY (FREE WEB CLASS)

Consistent Command = Consistent Message

Ideally, we should aim for a single word or phrase, consistently delivered in the same tone, whenever we want our dog to come. This word or phrase should signify “Come here, and I will reward you with food before allowing you to resume playing.”

The more varied our commands, voices, and sounds are, the more inconsistent the message becomes for our dog or puppy.

I understand that it's not always easy, but maintaining a calm demeanor and utilizing a consistent command, even when our dog fails to respond, is crucial for successful recall.

Refrain From Using Commands to Scold Your Dog

Above all else, refrain from scolding them upon their eventual arrival. Simply attach the leash and ignore any misbehavior.

It is remarkably easy to undermine a strong recall by angrily reprimanding them when they do come. This creates a detrimental cycle, making it even less likely for them to respond the next time they are called.

Therefore, remember this: The one clear command must convey the message “Come here, and I will reward you with food before allowing you to resume playing!”

How To Improve Recall Training with a Professional Dog Whistle

The whistle produces a consistent sound. Regardless of your frustrations, haste, or distress, when you blow the whistle, it emits a steady tone. Surprisingly, your dog responds remarkably well to this neutral sound.

Whistles are User-Friendly

Operating a professional dog whistle is a breeze (just be cautious with metal ones in extremely cold temperatures, as they may stick to your lips).

The sound of a whistle carries a great distance, much farther than your voice can travel. Voices do not carry well, particularly if you have a soft voice. The whistle I utilize can reach up to 500 feet, and it spares strain on your vocal cords!

REACTIVITY SOLVED (NO FOOD, NO FORCE)

Whistles Are Easy to Hear

Effective dog whistles operate at a high frequency, making it effortless for dogs to detect while remaining gentle on human ears.

The high-pitched tone also cuts through background noise, such as people shouting, wind, and the rustling of trees and bushes, due to its unique sound.

Using a Whistle Preserves Your Voice

You will never again need to shout or raise your voice in front of others.

Also, the fastest way to establish a reliable recall is to begin anew with a distinct sound. The whistle grants us this opportunity.

If you’re just starting whistle training for dog recall, or if you want to use the whistle the right way, you can check out my Whistle Training Masterclass. This training course will help you master the right way to use the whistle in no time. Free whistle included!

9 Dog Recall Training Rules That Will Change How Your Dog Reacts To Your Call

Whether you’re starting recall training for dogs, or you want to teach recall better to your dogs, here are some helpful rules to remember.

Rule #1: Avoid Giving Special Treats Freely

Remember, it's important not to offer special treats to your dog too freely and frequently.

By keeping these rewards limited, you make them more valuable and maintain your dog's motivation to respond to your call.

Rule #2: Establish The Idea That Responding to a Call = Rewards

Create a strong association between your dog coming to you when called and receiving rewards. This helps them understand that coming to you promptly leads to positive outcomes, reinforcing their recall behavior.

GET THE DOG CALMING CODE™.

Rule #3: Prepare Special Treats That Are ONLY for Recall Training

To make recall training extra enticing, prepare special treats that are exclusively reserved for these training sessions. This way, your dog will associate the unique treats with the recall command, making it even more rewarding for them.

Rule #4: Trust Your Dog

Have faith in your furry friend's abilities! Believe that they can successfully learn and improve their recall skills. Your confidence in them will positively influence their performance and reinforce a strong bond between you both.

Rule #5: Use a Line When Doing Recall Training

During recall training, consider using a long line or leash. This allows you to maintain control while giving your dog the freedom to explore and respond to your call. It provides a safety net and helps build a reliable recall even in distracting environments.

Rule #6: Use a Powerful, Familiar Command

Choose a clear and distinct command for recall, such as “Come” or “Here.” Consistency is key. By using the same command consistently, your dog will become familiar with the recall cue and respond accordingly.

Rule #7: Increase Motivation By Letting Them Know Hard Work Produces Treats

Boost your dog's motivation by letting them know that their hard work during recall training leads to tasty treats. Reinforce the idea that their efforts are rewarded, encouraging them to come to you eagerly and promptly.

Rule #8: Only Call When Necessary

Avoid overusing the recall command. By only calling your dog when necessary, you prevent diluting the importance and effectiveness of the recall cue. Reserve it for situations that require their immediate attention or potential danger.

Rule #9: Use a Professional Recall Whistle

Consider incorporating a professional recall whistle into your training routine. These whistles produce a consistent and easily distinguishable sound that carries well, ensuring your dog can hear it even from a distance. It provides a fresh start and a unique signal for recall training.

Now I know choosing the best dog recall whistle can be a tough choice. Believe me — I have tried every type of professional dog whistle for recall.

As a dog trainer, I always make sure to recommend the one that checks all the boxes. This is why I decided to design and manufacture a dog whistle that truly addresses dog recall issues of thousands of dog owners. You can check it out here!

Factors That Make Recall Training for Dogs Not Work

Factor #1: Inconsistent Reinforcement

One common reason for recall training failure is inconsistent reinforcement. If rewards are not consistently given when the dog responds to the recall command, they may not associate coming when called with positive outcomes. This inconsistency can confuse the dog and undermine the training progress.

Factor #2: Lack of Motivation

Dogs may fail to respond to recall commands if they do not find the rewards or reinforcement offered during training sessions motivating enough.

It's essential to understand what truly motivates your dog, whether it's treats, playtime, praise, or a combination, and use those incentives effectively during training.

Factor #3: Insufficient Training in Different Environments

Recall training conducted solely in a controlled or familiar environment may not translate to real-life situations.

Dogs need exposure to various environments, distractions, and stimuli to generalize their recall behavior. If training is limited to one setting, dogs may struggle to respond reliably in new or stimulating environments.

Factor #4: Ineffective Communication

Dog communication breakdowns can hinder recall training.

If the dog does not understand the recall command clearly or if the owner uses inconsistent cues or body language, the dog may become confused or unsure about what is expected.

Clear and consistent communication is vital for successful recall training.

How Long Does Recall Training Take?

When it comes to dog recall training, the duration of the training process can vary from dog to dog.

Dogs, like humans, require time to adapt to new skills and behaviors, and recall training is no exception. Consistency plays a crucial role in achieving success.

Recall Training Truth #1: Recall Training Takes Time

First and foremost, it's important to understand that dog recall training is not an overnight accomplishment. Dogs need time to grasp the concept and fully integrate the recall behavior into their routines. Patience is key during this process.

Recall Training Truth #2: Consistency is Key

Consistency is a vital factor in the effectiveness of dog recall training. Regular and consistent training sessions provide dogs with the opportunity to reinforce their understanding of the recall command.

It's not enough to practice the recall command occasionally or sporadically. Regular exercise of the recall behavior helps dogs build a strong association between the command and the desired action.

To achieve optimal results in dog recall training, consistent exercise is necessary.

Recall Training Truth #3: Practice Makes Perfect

Practice the recall command in various environments and situations, gradually increasing the level of distractions. This allows your dog to learn to respond to your call regardless of the surrounding stimuli.

By exposing your dog to different scenarios, you help them generalize the recall behavior, making it more reliable and applicable in real-life situations.

Recall Training Truth #4: Every Dog Is Different

It's important to note that the timeline for dog recall training can vary widely.

Some dogs may catch on quickly and demonstrate progress within a matter of weeks, while others may require more time and repetition to fully grasp the concept.

Each dog is unique, and their individual temperament, previous training experiences, and ability to learn all play a role in the duration of the training process.

Remember, successful dog recall training is a journey that requires dedication, consistency, and patience.

With time, effort, and regular exercise of the recall behavior, you can establish a strong and reliable recall response from your dog.

Daily Activities for Recall Training for Dogs

Indoor Recall Practice

In a controlled indoor environment, call your dog's name followed by the recall command (“Come” or any preferred cue).

Use an excited and positive tone. When your dog comes to you, reward them with praise and a high-value treat. Repeat this exercise multiple times throughout the day.

JOIN MY FREE REACTIVITY CLASS

Leashed Recall Walks

During regular walks, incorporate recall training by periodically calling your dog to come to you. Start with shorter distances and gradually increase the distance over time.

Use treats or toys as rewards when they reach you promptly. This exercise strengthens recall skills while adding distractions and reinforcing the behavior on-leash.

Recall with Distractions

Find a quiet outdoor area with mild distractions, such as a park or a backyard.

Allow your dog some freedom to explore, but intermittently call them to come using the recall command.

Increase the difficulty by introducing distractions like toys or other dogs. Reward them generously when they respond promptly despite the distractions.

Hide and Seek Recall

Play a game of hide and seek indoors or in a securely fenced area. Have a family member or friend hold your dog while you hide. Once hidden, call your dog's name followed by the recall command. When they find you, reward them with treats and praise. This game makes recall training fun and reinforces their response to your call.

Recall at Mealtime

Incorporate recall training into your dog's mealtime routine. Before placing their food bowl down, call them using the recall command. When they come to you, reward them with their meal. This reinforces the recall behavior and adds value to responding promptly to your call.

FREE REACTIVITY MASTERCLASS

Conclusion: Recall Is Your Call

Dear dog owner, your dog loves you and will naturally come to you.

However, it isn’t enough to know our dogs will come back to us. We have to be assured that through our command, we can help them be safe.

I know recall might be a daunting task, but it’s a skill that will not only keep your dog safe. It’s a skill that can help you create a lasting bond and connection with your beloved dog.

Through consistency and the right strategy, you can make your recall training efforts yield successful results.

Best of luck with your recall training!

Why-Dog-Shock-Collars-Are-a-Totally-Unnecessary-and-Destructive-Training-Tool-HEADLINE-IMAGE

Dog collars serve a very valuable purpose. They hold ID tags and vaccination records and can even make a fashion statement! But many people (dog owners and trainers) use collars, such as a shock collar, to prevent unwanted behavior.

This dog (in the image above) echoes my sentiment about the use of shock collars. COVER MY EYES because I don’t want to see any dog trained using fear tactics or painful devices that could make a dog’s behavior EVEN WORSE!

Shock-collar advocates think that the electric shock doesn’t hurt the dog, that it just ‘shocks,’ or grabs the dog’s attention, so that a behavioral correction can be made. They view the collar as an effective training tool that stops bad behavior.

I cannot emphasize how strongly I disagree with this fear-based training method.

To me, shock collars are a big No-No!

The Shocking Truth Behind Using Dog Shock Collars for Training

Why-Dog-Shock-Collars-Are-a-Totally-Unnecessary-and-Destructive-Training-Tool-BLOG-IMAGES-1

Despite what some people think, shock collars do inflict both physical and emotional pain. The emotional trauma may be the most damaging because the dog doesn’t understand why you continue to cause harm to them.

And it is NOT a long-term training solution.

By using a shock collar, you are using fear to suppress unwanted behavior rather than addressing the underlying cause behind your dog’s actions. In effect, the dog is trying to avoid a shock rather than learning how to behave correctly.

It should come as no shock to you that training your furry friend in this way comes with repercussions. Some include:

  • Increased anxiety because they are worried about an unpredictable shock.
  • Unreasonable worry about or fear of everyday sounds (a siren wails or a smoke detector that’s out of batteries beeps, and the dog may think that his collar is about to shock him ).
  • Inaccurate behavioral associations due to mistimed shocks (say a dog was looking at a tree and received a shock, she may become fearful of the tree).
  • Broken dog-owner relationship, where the dog fears their owner and leads to a lack of trust. This can result in the dog lashing out even more aggressively!
  • Poor well-being due to the stress, fear, and pain the dog is experiencing. He may start resisting food and become timid or nervous.

Why-Dog-Shock-Collars-Are-a-Totally-Unnecessary-and-Destructive-Training-Tool-BLOG-IMAGES-2

If a shock happens at the wrong time or place, the dog can become scared of objects or people that had NOTHING to do with the shock.

Using fear-based tools like dog shock collars are PROVEN to be ineffective as a long-term training solution.

Why?

Because it relies on the tool (in this case, the shock collar) being there. If you forget to put the shock collar on or it runs out of batteries, there is no foundational training to fall back on.

Here’s an example…

You shock your dog every time they get excited and jump on people as they come through the door. The batteries run out and you don’t have time to charge them. Your guests walk in and your dog suddenly doesn’t get the “warning beep.” Now, it’s fair game to jump on people.

Dogs are INCREDIBLY smart, and they will know when they can get away with things. If you use tools to train your dog or frighten them into submission, it doesn’t solve the reason behind why they are behaving the way they are.

Obviously, you don’t want to make an aggressive dog MORE aggressive or fearful of you. That’s why it’s so important to develop a kind and nurturing relationship with your pup that will set you up for a lifetime of good behavior.

Positive Training Methods that Don’t Require Dog Shock Collars

Why-Dog-Shock-Collars-Are-a-Totally-Unnecessary-and-Destructive-Training-Tool-BLOG-IMAGES-3

I don’t agree with forcing your dog into obedience…

I do agree with kind training techniques that win your dog’s mind so you can establish a relationship built on trust and respect. This is HANDS DOWN the best way to get your dog to listen to you.

I’ve helped over 88,000 dog owners build a positive relationship with my Dog Calming Code™ program. This program focuses on kind and gentle training methods that help you understand what’s going on in your dog’s mind.

The key is getting your dog to ignore all the other outside stimuli (a stranger walking through the door, another dog running through the park, etc.) so that he or she can focus solely on you and what you want him or her to do.

Using my Dog Calming Code™ will result in a calm dog that will remain in a relaxed state even when you leave the room!

Now, I understand that sometimes tools are necessary for training. But the tools I recommend are not the ones that subject your dog to pain or distress. For example, if you want your dog to be calmer on walks, try the Doggy Dan No-Pull Harness, which helps eliminate leash pulling.

Why-Dog-Shock-Collars-Are-a-Totally-Unnecessary-and-Destructive-Training-Tool-BLOG-IMAGES-4

If you find your dog simply does not pay attention to you while you’re in the park, the Doggy Dan Pro Dog Whistle means that you don’t have to yell anymore! Learn how to use the whistle effectively to get your dog to come to you despite any distractions with the Doggy Dan Whistle Training Masterclass DVD Bundle

All of these training tools prioritize your relationship with your dog and get to the root of your dog’s behavioral issues WITHOUT using forcible training methods that can make your dog’s issues even worse!

If you’re having a hard time getting your dog into a calm state BEFORE you begin training, Doggy Dan’s Angel Oil CBD Dog Treats could really benefit you!

When it comes to dogs and CBD, it's all about how this magical cannabinoid teams up with their endocannabinoid system (ECS). Your dog's ECS is like the superhero responsible for mood, memory, muscle movement, digestion, appetite, and balance. When the ECS is in harmony, your dog shines in all these areas. But when it's off-kilter, their well-being can take a hit.

Since CBD is a great sidekick for the ECS, giving your pup a dose of doggy CBD treats or tinctures might help them find their balance and feel awesome overall.

Remember…Angel Oil is always an AID and isn’t meant to be used forever in training your dog.

I ALWAYS encourage kind and gentle training methods that focus on building a strong connection between you and your dog so you can live a life full of love and obedience.

Why-Dog-Shock-Collars-Are-a-Totally-Unnecessary-and-Destructive-Training-Tool-BLOG-IMAGES-5

If you want a calm dog who listens no matter what is going on around you, I encourage you to take a look at my Dog Calming Code™ program. This program provides all the information you need to train your dog successfully without using harmful devices like shock collars.

Best of luck,

“Can I train my dog myself? Can I train my dog online?” If you find yourself asking this question, this blog will answer it.

dog training for beginners

Just the other week I answered a question I often get asked…

“Does my dog need obedience school?”

If you read the post and came to the conclusion that obedience school isn’t the right choice for your dog, you may now be wondering, “Can I really train my dog myself?”

My answer, in short, is “ABSOLUTELY”!

In fact, I encourage dog owners to take the reins and train their dogs themselves.

Why?

Training your dog (using the correct methods) is a foundational part of building a trusting relationship between you and your pup. You can also have a lot of fun and save a lot of money in the process!

But what if you don’t have any dog training experience? Perhaps you’ve just brought home your first puppy ever.

That makes you a beginner dog trainer and that’s 100% okay!

How do I know you can do it? Because training your dog really boils down to building a healthy relationship with him or her. And that’s fairly easy to do when you have the right tools.

What do I mean by “healthy relationship,” and what tools do you need? Let’s dive deeper into what I mean by that now…

[webinar_cta text=”JOIN THIS FREE CLASS TO TRANSFORM YOUR DOG IN JUST 7 DAYS!”]

Key Takeaways

  • You're More Capable Than You Think! Don't let a lack of experience stop you; you absolutely can train your own dog. It's an empowering and rewarding journey that strengthens your bond.
  • It's All About Connection, Not Just Commands. Before “sit” and “stay,” focus on becoming your dog's trusted leader. Understanding their world and earning their respect is the true foundation for effective training.
  • Equip Yourself for Success. While a solid training program like “The Dog Calming Code™” is your most vital tool, having a few key items—like leadlines, tasty treats, a crate, and a good harness—will truly set you up for a smooth and enjoyable training experience.

Dog Training for Beginners 101: Establishing a Healthy Relationship with Your Dog

First, let's talk about why snappy dogs are unique dogs, especially when it comes to aggression.

online dog training

When you think of training your pup you’re probably thinking about teaching them commands like sit or stay. Sure, that’s part of dog training, but before you get that far you must understand a much more important dog training component.

That component is learning how to gain your dog’s respect and trust so that they will listen to you!

Learning how to gain your dog’s trust and respect is something YOU must learn as your dog’s “leader.” Therefore, the dog training process begins with training yourself!

The reality is that your dog doesn’t care…

  • How big your house is.
  • What kind of car you drive.
  • What you do for work.

What is important to them is who controls the important things like…

  • Where the food comes from.
  • Playtime.
  • Having a safe spot to nap and relax.

Food, of course, is usually the most important thing on that list!

Do you see how our human mind and your dog’s mind are focused on very different things?

To train your dog, you have to think like your dog and tap into the psychology of what matters most to them. Until you do this and establish yourself as the trusted leader of your “pack,” no type of training is going to be very helpful.

So, how do you build that type of relationship with your pup?

I’ve taught over 50,000 people how to do it with my program, The Dog Calming Code™!

Learn more about what’s inside the Dog Calming Code™ here!

Can I Train My Dog Online?

The answer to whether you can train your dog online is a resounding “ABSOLUTELY!” In fact, the very program I mentioned, “The Dog Calming Code™”, is designed to be an online resource.

The beauty of online dog training is that it empowers you, the owner, to take the reins from the comfort of your own home. You don't need prior experience; the crucial element is a willingness to build a healthy relationship with your pup.

Online programs, particularly those with a strong foundational approach like “The Dog Calming Code™,” provide the tools and guidance you need. They often come with step-by-step video tutorials and comprehensive instructions, allowing you to learn at your own pace and apply the methods directly with your dog in their familiar environment. This not only makes the process convenient but also reinforces your role as the trusted leader, which is fundamental to successful training.

So, if you're ready to dive in and transform your relationship with your dog, online training can be a fantastic and effective path forward!

Now you know the secret to successfully training your pup and have the confidence to train your own dog! Brilliant!

Now, what do you need to have on hand to ensure your training plan is a success?

By far the most important tool you need is a solid dog training program (like the Dog Calming Code™ program I just mentioned above).

This is especially important if you’ve never trained a dog before.

Not only will my Dog Calming Code™ training program teach you to train your dog to do things like sit, stay, and come when called but it also helps you build the very important relationship foundation we discussed earlier.

If you really want to connect with your dog on a deep level so that your pup will listen to you when it matters most, I urge you to check out the dog training program now!

Learn more about my Dog Calming Code™ program here!

In addition to the program, there are a few additional tools that I recommend you have ready in your dog training tool belt.

Here’s a quick overview of what I personally like to keep on hand…

Leadline: Leadlines are great as they allow you to give your dog freedom while still having control, such as when socializing your pup  with new playmates or working on recall commands.

Training treats: Food is a fantastic motivator. As long as your training approach isn’t reliant on treats, having some delicious morsels on hand can make the process much easier.

Crate: On top of being a safe space for your dog, crates make wonderful “time out” areas for when you need to help your pup calm down and refocus.

Harness: A harness is a great tool for teaching dogs to walk nicely on a leash.

Toy: Instead of using food as a reward you can always substitute your pup’s favorite toy. After your dog listens to you, indulge in a little game of fetch or tug.

Whistle/Clicker: Some dogs respond well to audible cues, such as blowing a whistle to come or waiting for the sound of a clicker after performing a trick. These items aren’t 100% necessary but might be worth a try!

Not sure what to do with all of these training tools or how to use them?

Not to worry!

My Dog Calming Code™ program walks you through how to use all sorts of training tools in easy-to-watch step-by-step videos so you can see firsthand how I calmly and gently train dogs.

I’m so confident my program WILL enable you to train your dog from the comfort of your own home that I offer a 60-day money-back guarantee!

So, what are you waiting for?

Check out my Dog Calming Code™ and get the knowledge you need to train your pup from home starting today! I know YOU can do it!

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately 4.7 million dog bites occur in the United States each year.

Out of those 4.7 million bites, 800,000 of them result in the need for medical care.

According to these statistics, 1 out of every 69 people in the US has been bitten by a dog at least once in his or her life.

It’s likely that these statistics are shocking to you—especially if you own a laid-back, family-friendly dog who likes nothing more than to have his belly rubbed by strangers.

Yet, any time you’re around an animal—whether it be your happy-go-lucky Labrador Retriever or your neighbor's yappy Chihuahua—there’s the potential for an unexpected accident to happen.

As humans, we tend to blame the animal for any bite or scratch we may encounter. And sometimes—due to age, illness, or instinct—a dog may be completely at fault for an injury.

However, it usually takes two to tango.

And as a dog trainer, I know that there are hundreds, probably thousands, of dog attacks that never would have taken place if the humans involved in the accident knew how to handle the situation or read the warning signs sooner.

For that reason, I want to discuss a few safety tips specifically regarding what you should do if you ever find yourself in the path of an aggressive dog.

It’s my hope that you can use these skills to keep both yourself, and the dog at play, safe.

Here’s what you need to know…

Tip #1 – Avoid Confrontation at All Costs

Imagine you’re walking down the street and, just down the road, you see a gang of rough-and-tumble men looking for a fight.

Unless you’re Chuck Norris, it’s unlikely you’re going to continue to walk down the street and put yourself in the middle of an unwanted situation.

Instead, you might…

  • Turn around and go home until it’s safe to try again.
  • Cross over to the other side of the street, away from trouble.
  • Pick an alternative route that steers you clear from harm’s path.

The same logic should be applied if you come across an aggressive dog or a dog that intimidates you.

If you are far enough away from the animal, reconsider your route, and do your best to put as much distance between yourself and the dog as possible.

If you’re close to the dog, avoid eye contact, and mind your own business.

Eye contact can be seen as a threat and can often cause a dog to become aggressive as he feels the need to prove his dominance.

And, of course, it’s important to refocus your energy.

If you’re not looking for a fight and don’t put that kind of energy out there, you generally won’t get a fight.

Remember, dogs are very keen on picking up on your energy.

Remain claim, avoid eye contact, and make it clear that you have no desire to intrude on the dog’s territory; and he will likely leave you alone.

Tip #2 – Be Smart about Confrontation If You Have No Other Choice

While not being confrontational is the best choice, you may find yourself in a situation where you have no other option but to stand your ground.

If you are certain that a dog coming toward you is going to keep moving near you and if this is the only choice you have, remember that confidence is key.

You need to do whatever you can to make the dog you’ve encountered think that you are bigger, stronger, and fiercer than he is.

For instance, clapping and making a lot of noise while staring at the dog might actually scare him.

To illustrate this point, check out this cool video below on how 3 men are able to scare off a pack of lions and steal their meat.

(Of course, I NEVER advise you to try anything like this. However, it’s amazing to watch how 3 guys can use body language to take nearly an entire antelope off a pack of lions.)

Human Planet – Men stealing meat from lions

Note: If you fast forward to 2 minutes and 45 seconds, the narrator will discuss the importance of confidence in situations like this.

The bottom line is that if you have no other choice, you’ve got to do everything in your power to prove you are not intimidated and are the more powerful “animal” in the situation.

Tip #3 – Use Things around You for Protection

If you feel a dog is about to lunge at you, use objects around you for protection.

For example, if you are wearing a backpack, take it off, and use it as a “shield.” A dog is way more likely to bite a bag you hold out to block with than you.

If you’re outside, grab a big stick. More than likely the dog will choose to latch on to the stick instead of your arm or leg.

Climb a playset…

Use a metal trash can as a barricade…

Or climb a tree.

Use everything you can at your disposal to redirect a dog’s bite.

Tip #4 – Think Like a Dog

Most dogs aren’t aggressive for the sake of being mean or nasty.

In fact, an aggressive dog typically has an obvious reason as to why he’s acting in a defensive manner.

For example, the dog you come in contact with might be scared.

Think for a moment…are you trespassing on that dog’s property? Or might you be near something he’s trying to protect, such as a bone or puppies?

If this is the case, backing away from the dog slowly and picking a new path to take might be the solution to avoiding a dog attack.

Or maybe the dog you’ve come across is hungry.

Once again, this is a very logical reason a dog might be aggressive toward you.

If you have any snacks in your backpack or purse, it might make sense to throw them for the dog in order to put space between the both of you.

If this is the reason the dog is being aggressive, he will be much more likely to go after the food than you.

It’s not always easy to approach this type of situation in a calm manner. But if you’re able to take a minute to think about the reason behind why a dog might be aggressively approaching you, you might be able to find a solution to the problem that doesn’t end in violence.

Tip #5 – Be Prepared to Fight for Your Life

As a dog lover, I would never recommend that hurting an animal is the solution to any problem.

That being said, there are incredibly rare circumstances where you need to be prepared to fight back in order to save your life or a child's life.

If you’re being attacked by a dog, it’s vital that you fight back.

You can do this in several ways.

The first option is to physically fight back by holding the dog’s mouth away from you.

Do your best to use your body weight to secure the dog so he is unable to harm you until you’re able to get yourself to safety.

A dog’s ears and nose are very sensitive. If you’ve been bitten or a dog has bitten down on you (or a child) and won’t let go, pinch the dog’s nose. This will usually elicit a response for the dog to let go.

Second, if you live in an area where there are a lot of stray dogs roaming around, it’s a good idea to carry some form of pepper spray when you are out. The same type can be used on both humans and animals.

I prefer this option because it’s a more humane way to ensure the dog you come in contact with doesn’t get seriously injured.

Because dogs have such sensitive noses, I can almost guarantee that an aggressive dog would be turned off by the use of such a spray.

Last but not least, carry a high-pitched whistle that dogs don’t care for.

If you’ve got a dog moving toward you, a few blows into your dog whistle is often enough to discourage a dog from continuing to attack. Problem solved!

The Bottom Line on Encountering Aggressive Dogs

At the end of the day, it’s important to understand that dogs can be unpredictable and that it’s always vital to exercise caution when encountering a dog you don’t know.

While I hope these few tips I’ve shared would be useful in the event of an emergency, I can’t guarantee that they will always be 100% effective all the time.

The best way to ensure your safety is to always be prepared for an emergency and take practical steps to protect yourself, such as…

  • Carrying pepper spray.
  • Walking in groups when in an unfamiliar territory.
  • Avoiding stray dogs, no matter how inviting they seem.

Most important, if you have a dog that has aggressive tendencies, it’s your responsibility to…

  • Invest in proper training—check out my new program The Dog Calming Code, which will take the bite out of your dog's behavior. If you have a puppy, my Puppy Coach training program is also a great way to set a solid foundation for your pup.
  • Provide a secure, fenced-in living space for him where he’s contained and can’t get loose.
  • Place a safe and humane muzzle on him if you have people visiting your home.

While the chances of you encountering an aggressive dog are pretty slim, I want you to be prepared for any situation you might come across.

For that reason, I’ve developed a FREE guide that will help you identify whether a dog you’re around is aggressive or not.

Recall-Training-How-to-Get-a-Dog-to-Come-When-You-Call-HEADLINE

There’s nothing scarier than watching your dog run off across the beach, down the street, or through the woods while you helplessly call for him to come back to you without any luck.

It only takes seconds, for a dog to vanish before your eyes—all because your dog is excited and decided to chase a squirrel or heard another dog in the distance and wanted to check it out.

What might seem like fun adventure to your dog quickly turns into panic and overwhelm for you.

You may start thinking to yourself,“What if she gets lost and can’t find her way back?”

Or, “What if my dog get’s hit by a car?”

As a dog parent, I know this feeling all too well. Which is exactly why I stress the importance of recall training—how to get a dog to come when you call—in all of my training programs as well as when I’m working with individual clients.

Not only can recall training save your dog's life, but it can also keep other people and dogs safe in the event that your dog takes off after a person or other animal.

So, here’s the million dollar question… “How DO you get your dog to come every time your call her?”

Keep reading and you’ll find out…

7 Secrets To Training Your Dog To Come When Called, Every Time!

How to train your dog to come every time with Doggy Dan

Dogs and puppies NOT coming when we call them can be one of the most frustrating things!

We ask nicely, we call them, we shout and scream… We even begin to wonder if our dog or puppy has a hearing problem!

Even worse is when they’re running wild at the park and we have an audience watching us…so embarrassing!

Let’s face it, most dogs only come when they want to. You know, when it’s dinner time, when they want a pat or when there’s nothing else going on!

So what can you do to train your dog to come when called? Here’s 7 recall training secrets that will help you out…

1. Tasty Treats

Yes I know, we all hate bribery… BUT trust me on this one thing. If there is ever a time to use food to train your dog, then it’s when we’re developing the recall command.

I’m actually not a fan of using food when it comes to stopping behavioral issues, but this is different. This is asking our dog to do something as fast as they can and we need to reward (or pay) them so that they do it.

Think of the food as payment… After all, would you keep going to work if they stopped paying you?

So, when you ask your dog to stop playing with their best friend and come running–all the way back to you down the beach–they need more than just a pat!

Making sense?

Of course later on we can fade out the food, but for starters it’s ok to use treats.

2. Keep control

One of the most common questions I get asked is what do we do when our dog is running away and won’t come back? And the answer is simple…

There is not a lot you can do.

It’s the same as when a horse has bolted out the stable and is galloping off. They are out of control!

You see there are really only two ways to get our dogs to come to us…

The first way is when we still have physical control of them–so, they’re on a leash or a long line and we can get them to come to us with a bit of encouragement.

The second is that we have a verbal recall, in other words when we call them they listen and choose to come running!

So, if we don’t have a good recall we first need to consider option one by purchasing a line to attach them to. The safest way is to attach the line to a clip on the back of a dog harness.

If it’s just on a dog’s collar and you stop your dog abruptly you can injure your dog, so a word of warning there.

That said. This line will give you the opportunity to keep control and then train the recall – it’s a game changer!

Remember, without control and no recall, our dogs are by definition “Out of control.”

Don’t let that happen.

3. Set your dog up to win

Okay, this is a very subtle concept, yet hugely powerful. Let me first describe a typical scenario that occurs with a lot of dogs…

As soon as your dog is let off leash he runs off, happy as can be. He has heaps of energy and runs away fast. Often your dog may pick up on a smell or see another dog and go visit.

You, knowing that your dog has recall issues, starts to panic and you want to keep your dog under control so you make the decision to immediately try and call your dog back closer. But, your dog is so full of energy and delight at being free that the chance of him coming is next to zero. So why did you call the dog?

Was the dog doing anything wrong?
No.

Was the dog going to run off into the sunset?
No.

Was there any danger?
No.

Is the reason our dogs are off leash so they can run, sniff and play?
Yes.

Was the dog going to have a sniff or a quick play and then follow you?
YES!

In this case, we’re MUCH better off waiting until our dogs have had a quick run around and are coming TOWARDS us before calling them. One they’ve had a bit of freedom, then you can crouch down, give him a treat and let him go.

This is the concept of “Setting the dog up to win.”

We need to let our dogs have fun and call them only when we know they are going to come. Less is actually more. So only call your dog a few times. That keeps it special.

If your dog is totally focussed on something such as another dog, try just giving him a bit more time or maybe move closer to him or go and get him calmly.

Remember good dog trainers NEVER call the dog when they know they aren’t going to come!

4. Give one clear, constant command

Let me ask you a question…

How many different names, phrases, or voices do you use when you call your dog?

Come on, be honest! Most people have a whole selection of commands. Some when the dog is in trouble, some when there is a treat coming. And the truth is that all these different words, terms, and tones of voice just add to our dog’s confusion.

We really just want one word or phrase that we use every time we ask a dog to come and we want it to be in the same consistent tone. This word or phrase should mean “Come here and I’ll put food in your mouth and then I’ll let you go and play again”.

The more phrases, voices and sounds we use the more inconsistent it is for our dog or puppy. I know it’s not always easy, but staying calm and using a consistent command, even when our dog isn’t coming, is crucial if we want him to come.

And whatever we do, don’t tell them off when they finally arrive, just clip the leash on and ignore them. It’s so easy to instantly ruin a great recall when we scold them angrily when they finally do come. It becomes a vicious circle and the next time we call them they’re even less likely to come.

So remember: That one clear command needs to mean “Come here and I’ll put food in your mouth and then I’ll let you go and play again!”

5. Use the (HUGE) power of random rewards

Why do people play the lottery? To maybe win ten bucks? No…of course not.

Everyone’s playing to win the ten million dollars. We want to win HUGE and that’s what gets us hooked and coming back for more.

And guess what… It’s the same with our dogs! If they never know when they’re going to win next, or what they’re going to win, they’ll keep playing.

So, it’s random rewards that work so much better than just using the same food every time. There’s a huge difference in performance between a dog who knows the reward is just a dry biscuit at best (probably the same dry biscuits they ate for breakfast) and a dog who thinks they may get a piece of that yummy sausage, a morsel of cheese, or their favorite treat.

Just like humans… I know what I’d do for one million dollars compared to what I’d do for a single dollar.

And, just remember, the key is to keep our dogs guessing. They shouldn’t know which of the treats they are going to get. That’s the random bit!

Now, one simple way to do that is to have all the treats in a little bag or pocket and only bring the treat out once your dog has arrived. That way they can’t see what the random reward will be. And sometimes give your dog more than 1 little piece (Yep, small pieces is better) and sometimes give your dog 5 little pieces of different treats in a row. That’s random.

The day you take half a chopped up sausage, a little piece of cheese and some other yummy treat you will see what I mean. You won’t be able to get your dog to leave your side!

One sure way to win your dog or puppy’s heart is through their belly!

6. Increasing the motivation

Now this secret to success is understanding how to increase your dog’s motivation and drive to work for YOU.

Very simply… a hungry dog will work for food. A dog who is full will generally lose interest.

So, try taking your dog for a walk before you feed him. This way they’re hungry and far more motivated by the treats. Over time, you’ll start to realise that you actually have breakfast in your pouch and they have to “work” for it. It becomes a game 🙂

And most dogs LOVE running and eating so it should be fun! It’s actually much better for a dog to eat meals AFTER any vigorous exercise for the same reason it’s not good for humans to exercise straight after a large meal.

7. Consider the use of a professional dog whistle

Have you ever wondered why so many farmers use dog whistles? And why more and more professional dog trainers are starting to use them?

The answer is simply because they’re easy to use and they work! In fact, they’re one of the most useful tools when used correctly.

Here’s why:

The whistle has a constant sound. It doesn’t matter if you’re a bit frustrated with your dog or in a rush or upset, when you blow it the sound that emanates is constant. And your dog responds to that neutral sound very well.

Whistles are easy to use. A professional dog whistle is very easy to blow (be careful of the metal ones when it’s really cold though as I’ve had them stick to my lips).

The sound of a whistle travels a long way, a lot farther than you can shout. Voices don’t travel that well, especially if you have a quiet voice. The whistle that I use can travel up to 500 feet and it’s gentle on your vocal chords!

Easy to hear. Good dog whistles operate at a high frequency. This means that they can pick up the sound easily and it’s appealing to them, but not at all harsh on the human ear.

The high pitch also cuts through all the background noise such as other people shouting, wind, trees and bushes because it’s such a unique sound.

Using a whistle saves your voice. You never need to shout or raise your voice in front of people ever again.
Fresh start. For many people the quickest way to develop a great recall is to start again with a fresh sound. The whistle gives us this chance.

How to Train Your Dog to Come Every Time

How to train your dog to come every time with Doggy Dan

Recall training is all about getting your dog to return to your side on command. And in theory it’s so simple. You call your dog and they come running towards you wagging their tail.

Yet in reality so many people struggle with this. Unfortunately it results in dogs being walked only on by leash their entire lives, or worse still, they aren’t walked at all for fear of them never coming back.

To discover how to get your dog to come every time you call, take a listen to this podcast from Doggy Dan himself.

For additional info, check out the blog in full here.

How to Get Your Dog to Sit, Wait, and Come!

We all love it when our dog comes first time (I call this the recall) but it doesn’t always happen that way and it doesn’t happen overnight.

To develop an amazing recall where you can call your dog from extremely long distances, or off a high speed chase takes time, a strong bond and a dog that really listens and does what you say even though sometimes they would rather do something different.

I am proud to say that I have called my dog off a high speed chase when she caught sight of a bunny and bolted. On my call she stopped, turned and came straight to me. And as you can see in the video below, I’ve called my dogs from the neighbors yard. This is something to aim for and with everything, practice makes perfect!

Watch the recall video now…

Pretty neat, right?

It might look easy, but this type of recall training took some work—even for me as a dog trainer. This type of command training simply doesn’t happen overnight.

So, while you’re working with your own dog, here’s a few things I want you to think about while working with your dog…

What your praise is worth? You decide the value of your own affection, pats, cuddles and praise. Does your dog just get it for free?

Make everything on your terms. Never give your dog a pat, cuddle or affection on its terms or you are making it worthless in your dog’s eyes.

Recall training starts at home. Calling your dog around the house is the start of the recall.

Call your dog once. Never call your dog lots of times. Make sure that your dog has heard, then treat or ignore.

Encourage. You can encourage your dog to keep coming by saying the words, “good girl, good girl” in a high energy voice.

Use a gentle voice. Your voice should be soft, gentle and encouraging. Not threatening. The quote, by horse whisperer Monty Roberts, sums it up: “Use as little as possible, but as much as necessary”. You can always use a more commanding voice when you need to outside, off leash.

Motivate your dog. Find out what your dog loves and start by using this
practice training before dinner. This way your dog is hungry and very motivated.

Use some of your dog's dinner to train. Take a portion of what your dog receives for his dinner and use it to train so he is not over fed.

For additional tips and tricks, read the entire blog post here.

The last thing I want to mention that may be helpful to you is The Dog Calming Code program. This program is designed to teach you to teach your dog how to calm down and listen to your instruction when it matters most.

Check out The Dog Calming Code here.

(Or, if you have a puppy, you might want to get started with my Puppy Coach training program here!)

I wish you the best as you work with your pup!

If you want to learn about the strategies on how to make a dog come to you, this blog will teach you the tips and tricks that will always get you dog's attention.

how to make a dog come to you

If you've called your dog before and you get no response, it can be frustrating, demoralising, and potentially dangerous. What happens next if can't even call your dog back? Should you always keep them on a leash? What should you do if your dog has stopped responding to your calls?

Doggy Dan has tips! Read on to learn more…

Key Takeaways

  • Body language matters: Pay attention to your dog's behavior and energy levels. Don't call them back when they're clearly engrossed in play; instead, wait for a natural lull or when they're already heading your way.
  • Clear communication is key: Use one consistent command for recall and avoid confusing your dog with multiple phrases or tones. A professional dog whistle can be a valuable tool for clear, long-distance communication.
  • Positive reinforcement is powerful: Use tasty treats as a reward during recall training, but remember to keep your dog guessing with random rewards.

Before You Start Training…

how to make a dog come to you

Dogs and puppies NOT coming when we call them can be one of the most bothersome things!

We ask nicely, we call them, we shout and scream… We even begin to wonder if our dog or puppy has a hearing problem!

Even worse is when they're running wild at the dog park and we have an audience watching usso embarrassing for us pet parents!

Let's face it, most dogs only come when they want to. You know, when it's dinner time, when they want a pat or when there's nothing else going on!

But when you REALLY want them to come, because you need to get in the car and go home, or they're about to ruin somebody's picnic, or when they're in dangerous situations… that's when it actually matters most and it seems like it's at this point that many people's attempt at recalling them fails. As a professional dog trainer I've seen it all…

…including those people who are just too scared to let their dog or puppy loose in case they disappear into the sunset!

In fact over the years it seems to me that this is one of THE MOST COMMON behavioral issues and YET… it's one of the simplest to solve (when you know how)! All it usually takes is somebody who knows the tricks to point out where you are going wrong and then you can turn it around.

That's right, it IS possible to train your dog (ANY dog in fact)… Even if they're a husky or a beagle! No matter what age or size or shape or energy levels they have.

So here's a checklist of what to change if you're struggling with getting your dog to come when you call. I'm going to keep it as simple as I can, but you really have to follow the steps for it to make sense! Seriously… The next 5 minutes could change your life forever. Work your way down the list and make sure you've got all these things covered before you start training.

And if you read all 7 you'll discover I have a gift for you at the end. Did you get that? That's right. A free gift. From me to you…

By the way, these really are my 7 Secrets To Success when it comes to the RECALL (which is the general term given to getting your dog to come back when YOU want them too!)

Here we go…

My 7 Secrets To A Successful Recall

  1. Tasty Treats
  2. Keep control
  3. Setting our dogs up to win
  4. One clear, constant command
  5. Use the (HUGE) power of random rewards
  6. Increasing the motivation
  7. Consider the use of a professional dog whistle

Secret #1: Tasty Treats for Positive Reinforcement

Yes I know, we all hate bribery… BUT trust me on this one thing. If there is ever a time to use food to train your dog then it's when we're developing the recall with our dog.

I'm actually not a fan of using food reward when it comes to stopping behavioral issues but this is different. This is asking our dog to do something as fast as they can and we need to reward (or pay) them so that they do it. Think of the food as paymentAfter all, would you keep going to work if they stopped paying you?

So when you ask your dog to stop playing with their best friend and come running all the way back to you down the beach — they need more than just a pat!

Making sense?

Of course later on we can fade out the food, but for now, let's just get it happening.

This is so important because if you start to fade it out too soon, before our dogs have developed a strong positive association with basic commands, then the whole process can break down.

Secret #2: Keep Control

recall training for dogs

One of the most common questions I get asked is what do we do when our dog is running away and won't come back? And the answer is simple…

There is not a lot you can do.

It's the same as when a horse has bolted out the stable and is galloping off. They are out of control!

You see there are really only two ways to get our dogs to come to us…

The first way is when we still have physical control of themso they're on a long leash or a long lead and we can get them to come to us with a bit of encouragement.

The second is that we have a verbal recall, in other words when we call them they listen and choose to come running! We need to have a reliable recall.

So if you don't have a good recall, we first need to consider option one by purchasing a line before you begin training. The safest way for most dogs is to attach the line to a clip on the back of a dog harness.

If it's just on a dog's collar and you stop your dog abruptly you can injure your dog, so a word of warning there.

That said. This line will give you the opportunity to keep control and then train the recallit's a game changer!

Remember, without control, and no recall, our dogs are by definition “Out of control.” Don't let that happen.

Secret #3: Setting Our Dogs Up To Win

teach dogs recall training

Okay, this is a very subtle concept, yet hugely powerful. Let me first describe a typical scenario that occurs with a lot of dogs…

Secret #4: One Clear, Constant Command

dog recall training tips

Let me ask you a question…

How many different names, phrases or voices do you use when you call your dog?

Come on, be honest!!! Most people have a whole selection of commands. Some when the dog is in trouble, some when there is a treat coming… And the truth is that all these different words, terms and tones of voice just add to our dog's confusion.

We really just want one word or phrase that we use every time and we want it to be in the same consistent tone. This word or phrase should mean “Come here and I'll put food in your mouth and then I'll let you go and play a fun game”.

The more phrases, voices and sounds we use, the more inconsistent it is for our dog or puppy. Remember, dogs can be easily distracted. I know it's not always easy but staying calm and using a consistent command even when our dog isn't coming can be crucial if we want them to come.

Secret #5: Use the (HUGE) Power Of Random Rewards

Why do people play the lottery? To maybe win ten bucks? No… of course not.

Everyone's playing to win the ten million dollars. We want to win HUGE and that's what gets us hooked and coming back for more.

And guess what… It's the same with our dogs! If they never know when they're going to win next, or what they're going to win, they'll keep playing because they know a high-value treat awaits them!

treats for whistle training dogs

So it's random rewards that work so much better than just using the same food every time. There's a huge difference in performance between a dog who knows the reward is just a dry biscuit at best (probably the same dry biscuits they ate for breakfast) and a dog who thinks they may get a piece of that yummy sausage, a morsel of cheese, or their favourite treat.

One sure way to win your dog or puppy's heart is through their belly!

Secret #6: Increasing The Motivation for Dog Training

Now this secret to success is understanding how to increase your dog's motivation and drive to work for YOU

Very simply… a hungry dog will work for food. A dog who is full will generally lose interest.

So try taking them for their walk before you feed them. This way they're hungry and far more motivated by the treats. Over time you'll start to realise that you actually have breakfast in your pouch and they have to “work” for it. It becomes a game

And most dogs LOVE running and eating so it should be fun! It's actually much better for a dog to eat meals AFTER any vigorous exercise for the same reason it's not good for humans to exercise straight after a large meal.

If you must, just a few treats or a small part of their meal before you leave is fine, but don't over feed them or they won't be interested in the training!

Apart from food, tap on fun, too! Begin adding movement to your recall training. Make recall training fun by incorporating games like running or hide and seek!

Secret #7: Consider The Use of a Professional Dog Whistle As Your Recall Cue

dog whistles to make dog come to you

Have you ever wondered why so many farmers use dog whistles? And why more and more professional dog trainers are starting to use them?

The answer is simply because they're easy to use and they work! In fact they're one of the most useful tools when used correctly.

Here's why:

It doesn't matter if you're a bit frustrated with your dog or in a rush or upset, when you blow it the sound that emanates is constant. And your dog responds to that neutral sound very well. The sound of the whistle can be your “emergency word” to call your dog in case of danger.

Reason #2: So easy to use.

A professional dog whistle is very easy to blow (be careful of the metal ones when it's really cold though as I've had them stick to my lips).

Reason #3: The sound of a whistle travels a long way.

The whistle can produce a sound that travels a lot farther than you can shout. Voices don't travel that well, especially if you have a quiet voice. The whistle that I use can travel up to 500 feet and it's gentle on your vocal chords!

Reason #4: Easy to hear.

Good dog whistles operate at a high frequency. This means that they can pick up the sound easily and it's appealing to them but not at all harsh on the human ear.

Reason #5: The high pitch sound.

Using whistlealso cuts through all the background noise such as other people shouting, wind, trees and bushes because it's such a unique sound.

Reason #6: Saves your voice.

You never need to shout or raise your voice in front of people ever again.

Reason #7: Fresh start.

For many people, the quickest way to develop a great recall is to start again with a fresh sound. The whistle gives us this chance.

Reason #8: It can be used as your emergency recall.

If you think your dog has wandered to longer distances, it's great to have a tool you can make your dog come back in case of danger. The Doggy Dan dog whistle can do that for you.

So there you go. Start at the top and put ALL those steps into place and if you are still struggling consider trying the whistle.

I use the whistle when I REALLY need my dogs to come immediately!! (As you will see in the video below!) However I can still use my voice command around the house etc.

It means I have a recall… and then I have my SUPER URGENT whistle recall when I need them to come running as fast as they can.

Of course there are lots more tips and tricks that I'll share with you later but I'm sure that's enough for you to get started on something right now.

So I hope that's been of real help.
