It is true of any dog that they are born with their own individual personality and as long as you are consistent with the information you give them then you will be raising a happy and well behaved dog. Dear Mr. Dan,
Very informative and insightful blog. I agree with you. I followed all your tips earlier when I adopted OOM, a male Doberman. I am very happy about it. It was a quitestest and very accommodating with in the pack of dogs from some mother. I wanted the quites one. Now, He is very comfortable with a stranger also, he does not do the task of guarding the house, never barks at strangers ! Only thing some time make me think, in future I will adopt in between personality dog.
Any thoughts?

Having adopted a Brittany spaniel – in Brittany, so a smaller, hairier dog than the American version – I wouldn’t quite agree that they don’t shed much! Maybe not the worst but a good vacuum cleaner is a must, and, having collected dark colour clothes over the years of owning a black cocker, I now wish I had wardrobe that didn’t show the orange and white ones Elfie leaves on them!

But she’s worth it, and we’ll never regret rescuing her, she has the sweetest character, though having spent the first seven years of her life as a hunting dog, she’ll never lose the impulse to chase certain furred and feathered things.

In my household, we do not have to think about getting a dog from a rescue center or shop for a dog in a pet shop. Our dogs are offsprings of our dam and we decided to keep them when nobody had the heart to ask for them because they did not have long hair or because they were not cute or they did not have a breed to speak of. We kept some of them because they were sick and needed care. Actually, we have kept most of the mother dog’s litter in her 6 pregnancies and we have not regretted keeping them. Some of them though have died during birth or due to accident or due to some diseases. To date only 6 dogs are alive and well with ages between 2 years old and 5 years old. After the mother’s 6th pregnancy, we decided to spay her so she would not have to be saddled by little pups. She however died last year, 2 years after she got spayed. We know our dogs well since we help bring them to this world. We stayed up late to watch the dam deliver them and stayed up late so we could feed the mother after she has delivered all of her pups. We took care of the pups even when they were in their mother’s womb by taking care of the mother. So we never had to think about adopting a puppy for our household. These dogs are heaven sent.. they make our lives complete and they are our source of inspiration and our joy.

Love all your posts. It really comes thru that you
love your dogs and dogs in general. To win the heart of a dog is what it is all about. It is possible to work thru anything when you have the heart of your dog. That’s is ultimately what you do teach people how to have the heart of their dog. Thanks so much. You are all awesome.
