Hi Lex,
Some of the training rules are flexible but the 5 Golden Rules I refer to should be present and unedited as they are the key to overcoming any behavioural issues you may be experiencing with your dog. If toileting your dog outside is an issue due to the weather then you can certainly start off the training indoors, using training pads and a designated toileting area indoors. We have many members who live in apartments and train their dogs/puppies to toilet indoors for convenience. One the weather improves you can then progress to outdoor training. My website TheOnlineDogTrainer.com shows you very clearly how to achieve this…maybe take a quick look…its a $1 trial for 3 days…all the best Doggy Dan

I love the logic based in fact about animal psychology, all in a positive rather than negative environment. Do your recommended training rules ever change? i.e. we just adopted a 7 month old chihuahua/dachshund cross, no history on her. She’s more of a timid personality so far, but sweet. It’s cold outside here in the northeast, and being outside seems nearly cruel to her tiny frame; she shivers uncontrollably. She is not toilet trained yet, to outside or to pads, not sure what’s been going on up to this point. Might this be an instance where toileting to puppy pads indoors initially, then moving outdoors once the warmer weather arrives would be a wise choice? ALso, I’ve read that the breed is “classically difficult to toilet train.” Your thoughts? Many thanks!

Hi,
I always advocate for dogs in this scenario as they view food very differently to use. Dogs are opportunist scavengers by nature and if they see food left laying around deserted then they may feel completely justified in taking that food….it’s a survival instinct! Not all dogs will steal food from counters or bench tops but for those that do my very simple advice is to make sure you avoid leaving food out and pack it away out of their reach. This also includes rubbish bins as well. Doggy Dan

Any suggestions

She need be in heat first before she can breed, which normally happens every six to seven months. However, even though she may go into heat while she’s young or even though she came from big dog breeds, she still may not be physically mature enough to carry, deliver, and take care for her new babies. That is why you should wait until your dog is physically mature enough before you can think of breeding her. For some breeds, this may be two or more years of age. But, for most small dog breeds, they mature a lot faster than middle dog breeds and big dog breeds.
