Hi Pat, great question.
It’s never to late for our dogs to learn to cope in social situations, but some may need a little time and patience. Rather than rush dogs into complex social situations….thing a packed dog park at peak hour….try taking a more gentle approach. Small outings and often, are a great way to teach a dog to cope in the outside world. Taking your dog to a park and allowing him to observe the other dogs from a safe distance will soon reveal how he feels about those other dogs, and it will allow you to work him through his behaviour safely and positively.
At the end of the day some dogs really don’t enjoy being around or interacting with other dogs, and that’s ok! Finding something that your dog does enjoy may be a better option for him. However if his reaction to other dogs is an over-reaction then you can definitely work on this! Hi,
I have a german shepherd who is older, and very protective of me. She is great with other people, as long as I am not there. When I am there, she barks at anyone that gets near me. My son is a perfect example. My Nikki loves him unconditionally. However, if I am in my bedroom and he enters to talk to me, Nikki acts like a vicious maniac. She is old and stays laying down and her tail wags, but she barks at him and she is very mouthy. When he tries to pet her, she acts like she is trying to bite him. She does bite, but mouths everyone. I have tried everything. Can you help?

My dog is almost seven months old and has had very little opportunity to socialize with other dogs. Is it to late to do this? Thanks
